MAIA JELAVIC 'SPANISH MOSS' SINGLE LAUNCH

  • Mixtape Brewing & Bar 142A Victoria Road Marrickville, NSW, 2204 Australia (map)

Maia Jelavic is a Sydney-based singer-songwriter and multidisciplinary artist whose music lives at the intersection of emotional vulnerability and sonic ambition. A sought-after multi-instrumentalist and collaborator, Maia has long been a quiet force in the Australian music scene—currently one half of the alt-country duo The Darling Hearts, she previously fronted the indie-rock trio Motion Sickness and was a founding member of dream-pop band Goodside, as well as accompanying a slew of
Australian artists—before returning to her solo roots with a sound that is both expansive and deeply personal.

Rooted in folk and rock traditions but unafraid to stretch into ambient and experimental terrain, fans of artists like Big Thief, Angie McMahon, and Maple Glider will find a familiar resonance in
Maia’s work—but her voice and vision are entirely her own.

Her recently released single, “Solid and Human” was met with glowing praise, a packed out launch show at The Midnight Special in Newtown and strong local radio support, receiving airplay on FBi Radio, 2SER, and triple j. Described as “a veritable sonic journey... with shimmering walls of noise and gossamer silk vocals” (Backseat Mafia), it marked a bold return— revealing an artist in full command of her craft.

Now, Maia follows it up with “Spanish Moss”, the second single from her forthcoming debut album. Piano-led and rich with layered, ghostly instrumentation, the track conjures a slow-
burning, hypnotic atmosphere—balancing introspection with transcendence, and storytelling with sonic exploration.

Long respected as a powerful live performer within the Sydney music scene, Maia has built a dedicated underground following—despite having shared only fragments of her recorded work until now. Her songs are quietly intense: poetic meditations on identity, grief, longing, and resilience, wrapped in arrangements that swell and shimmer with both delicacy and force.

Recorded over three days in a beachside studio in Coogee with engineer and co-producer Charlie Tait & mastered by Nick Franklin, Maia's debut album feels like both a culmination and a
beginning—marking her emergence as a solo artist with a distinct voice and a deeply human vision. With her feet in folk and her eyes on something far more expansive, Maia Jelavic is a luminious prescence on the horizon of Australian music.
